About

The main aim of this project is to build and develop a small-sized hydroponics system that is automated and intelligent with low operational costs. Different sensors and actuators that can monitor and configure control variables associated with the hydroponics system (e.g., nutrient level, and pH level) will be connected to the system. A camera with a special lens will also be integrated which will allow growth tracking of the plant in the system. The system will be networked to the Internet via a Raspberry Pi, and an app will be developed for the user to monitor the plant remotely and be notified if there is special attention required from the farm. Since it is a small-sized system, it should be able to fit into any space in the house.

Background

Hydroponics is a type of farming that does not require the use of soil. The plant in the system relies directly on the nutrient solution for its needs. Because of this, huge flexibility can be introduced to the farm, ranging from making it vertical to increase the yield per area to making the farming experience more automated and self-sufficient. A farm can now be built at the heart of a city, and its yield can be supplied directly to the local groceries. And most importantly, this technique opens a new door for urban dwellers to produce their own food.

Goals and Objectives

There are three main goals that I seek to achieve at the end of this project.

Build a hydroponics system that is automated with a low operational cost.
Allow the farm to speak on its needs (intelligent farm).
Develop an app that acts as an interface to the hydroponics system and allows monitoring processes and configuring system variables to take place remotely.

Stages

The project is divided into three phases, each with different focus. The idea is to divide the workload into small and manageable chunks which will allow me to focus on one aspect of the project at a time. Currently, I am in Phase 1 of the project.
